The cancer prevention and treatment is a comprehensive treatment and services supported by the multidisciplinary medical team composed of physicians, case managers, research assistants, nursing staff and social workers in the departments of internal medicine, surgery, pathology, radiology, hematology and oncology, tranquility care and psychiatry depended on the patient's period, physical fitness, economy, family and other conditions. Moreover, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Division and the Nutritional Division also participate in the shared cares, in order to provide appropriate medical services for patients from diagnosis to treatment and from the earliest to latest stage. The CMUH hopes to relief patients’ fears against cancer, to extend their survival and to provide them high-quality and dignified treatments.

Many cancers can be found and prevented with early detections. The CMUH is actively committed to promote a variety of cancer screening for early detection and treatment based on the concepts of prevention.

The CMUH integrates the expertise of various specialist physicians to design customized treatment plans for various cancer cases through multi-disciplinary communications and efficient use of resources based on case studies. It also collects multi-disciplinary treatment advices to make appropriate treatment planning arrangements and to improve the quality of overall cancer treatments and each case.

The surgical oncology physicians in the Cancer Center skilled at operating. The surgical achievements are as outstanding as those of famous medical centers around the world.

Most of lung cancer surgery in the CMUH take the thoracoscopic lobectomy surgery. Compared with traditional thoracoscope, this surgery supports shorter treatment course, minor pain of postoperative wound, harder wound infection or dehiscence, less complications and impacts on the patient’s activities and respiration. Also, the shorter thoracic duct placement period and faster recovery can help the patient to back to daily life early and to improve the quality of life. At present, the CMUH has developed the undobronchoscopic ultrasound (EBUS), so that some patients may be free from the diagnostic mediastinal endoscopic surgery and the diagnosis rate can be up to 90%.

In terms of colorectal cancer, the major feature of the Cancer Center is the laparoscopic colorectal surgery. It applies the precise laparoscopy in the colorectal cancer surgery and reaches the leading achievements in Taiwan. In addition, with the new equipment and instruments, it conducts the live demonstrations with one foreign hospital after another, and presents the live demonstrations of surgery for the exchange with foreign scholars via network. The CMUH also promotes the training and inheritance of various types of laparoscopic surgery actively. It has completed the surgical laparoscopic teaching materials and conducted laparoscopic learning camps and field animal operations for resident physicians. It aims to teach the rich knowledge and experiences to the next generation physicians and to attract and train more talents for the benefit of more patients.

In addition to traditional surgical oncology surgery, the Cancer Center integrates cutting-edge medical technologies in various fields, such as the sounder (throat) reconstruction with the self-intestinal tract, the vagina reconstruction with the large intestine, the cervix reconstruction with the cecum, and many organs (esophagus, ureter and urethra, head and neck) reconstruction, lymphoid tissue remodeling and limb reconstruction, in order to dramatically improve the medical care and life quality for patients. Moreover, the high-precision reconstructive microsurgery has reached a number of innovative achievements and gained a world-wide reputation.

With the progressive targeted therapy providing another efficient treatment for patients with cancer, the Cancer Center is also committed to the related clinical research and development. It aims to combine new drugs and biomarkers to effectively improve patient response rate, to increase their survival and to improve their quality of life. In addition, it also applies the combination of various treatments in the clinical treatments, such as the combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in order to reduce the postoperative recurrence rate of patients with cancer.

The CMUH support radiotherapy services as progressive as those of the advanced medical centers around the world. In addition to the general 2D radiation therapy, 3D conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), electron-ray therapy and brachytherapy, it also supports the imagine guided radiation therapy (IGRT), tomotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body cavity radiotherapy (SBRT), total body irradiation (TBI), respiratory control radiotherapy (RGRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT-Rapid Arc technique). It is the leading radiation oncology center in the central Taiwan.

The CMUH also develops the Chinese medicine adjuvant therapy positively. It not only reliefs the side effects in the course of treatment, but also provides the palliative cares for patients who cannot receive active standard treatment in the terminal stage.

In terms of the improvement of hospital diagnosis and treatment capacity and the enhancement of local cancer treatment and care, the CMUH has complied with the programs of Ministry of Health and Welfare. It performs the cross-hospital cooperation and assists the cooperated hospital to pass the Cancer Treatment Quality Certification with the hospitals passed the Level A certification, in order to strengthen the quality of medical care and management for patients with cancer.

The CMUH has performed the program to cooperate with the Tungs’ Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital, the Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Lin Sin Hospital, the Cheng Ching Hospital, the Kuang Tien General Hospital, the Chang Bing Show Chwan Memorial Hospital and Miaoli Da Chien Hospital and established the single contact window. Through the visits between the CMUH and the cooperated hospitals to comprehend the problems and issues in the medical treatment, care and management of the Cancer Treatment Quality Certification for these cooperated hospitals, the CMUH assists the educational and practical trainings for their personnel in charge of medical treatments of caners.
