In addition to medical treatments, the Department hope to treat various renal diseases and patients with renal diseases through the combination of exercise rehabilitation and nutrition education. It aims to recover the physical and mental health for patients, and even assist them to reenter the community.

Because of the convenience of the internet, many messages about chronic renal disease are easily available online. In clinical practice, the most common problem we encounter is that patients cannot judge which is better among a lot of information. For example, many foods in our daily life contain phosphorus, whereas patients with poor renal function shall control the phosphorus intake. However, these patients do now know what food they can eat after learning the health educations of diet.

The Department of Nutrition provides more comfortable and intimate health educations of nutrition in the out-patient clinic for patients with chronic renal failure and dialysis patients. It provides complete nutritional supports for patients and maintains good nutritional status of patients.

In conjunction with the Preventive Medicine Center, the Department of Nephrology endeavors to promote comprehensive prevention educations of chronic kidney disease (CKD). It promotes the importance of renal care and self-care and the regular medical treatments. It aims to reduce or relief the increase of the number of patients with chronic renal diseases, and then to reduce the incidence of uremia.

Because of diseases, patients with chronic renal failure and dialysis patients may not practice exercise so that their strength may decline gradually. In CMUH, the team of exercise center composed of specialists, dietitians and professional sport therapists to provide professional adaptive exercises.

Since the impacts of many chronic diseases lead poor exercise capacity and physiological function, dialysis patients may have lower willingness to exercise. However, the exercise capacity and performance affect quality of life and survival rate in accordance with the researches of the Center. Therefore, the Center not only encourages patients to continue exercising, but also proactively provides accessible equipment and environment.

There are many kinds of renal diseases. The two renal diseases leading uremia are the glomerulonephritis caused by the inflammation of glomerulus and the tubulo-interstitial nephritis caused by the inflammation of renal tubules and interstitial substance. In Taiwan, one of the essential causes of uremia is glomerulonephritis. The Department has contributed great efforts in the diagnosis and treatment of glomerulonephritis and reached good achievements. 

Nephrotic syndrome may be the primary renal diseases or the secondary renal diseases, such as diabetes and lupus erythematosus. The main symptom is too many protein loss in the urine, and easy to cause the lower edema, hypercholesterolemia and hypoalbuminemia. At present, most of the nephrotic syndrome can be effectively treated in the Department.

Nephrolith, one of common diseases, may be caused by inheritance, abnormal life patterns or long-term and chronic inflammation and may result very sharp back pain. The cause of nephrolith may be discovered for about one-third patients. In case the kidney stones stuck in the urethra, it may require to crush the stone by means of lithotripsy. The specialists in the Department of Nephrology or Department of Urology can provide a good treatment for nephrolith.

The malignant tumors grown from the renal can be called as the rental cancer. According to the tumor cell type, renal cancer can be divided into renal cell carcinoma, renal pelvis cancer, renal adenocarcinoma and other rare tumors, such as sarcomas or metastatic tumors.

Most of renal cancers in adult are renal cell carcinomas. It refers to the malignant tumor evolved from the epithelial cells of the renal tubule mainly. The only one cure opportunity for renal cancer is early diagnosis and early treatment. However, most of the early renal cancer will not present any symptoms. At present, only regular health examinations, including renal ultrasound and urinalysis, are likely to detect early renal cancer. In case a renal cancer is found in early stage and the nephrectomy is performed early, the survival rate of patient can reach more than 80%. Therefore, the early diagnosis is very important. The Department and the Health Examination Center can provide the early diagnosis and treatment.

Hypercholesterolemia or hypertriglyceridemia caused by dyslipoproteinemia is common in fat smokers and patients with diabetes. Especially, the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) abnormalities is the most essential cause of cardiovascular diseases. The Department removes the LDL with the dual plasma filtration technology to reduce blood lipids rapidly and drastically.

Based on the standards of medical center, the Department practices the molecular biology analysis for various types of lipid metabolism disorders to explore causes of diseases deeply. We believe that the LDL removal technology can improve the patients’ quality of life significantly and reduce the risks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. This technology is also available for patients with severe acute pancreatitis caused by triglycerides.
